A 457(b) is a deferred compensation plan for employees of state and local government agencies, including public school employees. The plan provides an opportunity to save for the future with pre-tax dollars and defers taxation on income and earnings until withdrawal. Like the 403(b), the 457(b) plan provides a supplement to retirement income.
